Winter is here and brought along its best friend, Dryness.  I know, how rude to come uninvited every winter and stay for months.

It’s time to break out the humidifiers, clean them out extremely well, and set them up where our 2-year-old will not pull it over and spill water everywhere.  I am definitely not ready for that.

I was thrilled when my sister informed me of an easier way to humidify our home while adding an extra benefit to our health!  Simply pull out any pot you wish (I use the largest pot we have), fill it with water and let boil, turn down to a simmer, and add cinnamon sticks, cloves, citrus peels, essential oils, etc.  You can customize recipes to suit your liking

Essential oils are very beneficial for the body.  I have two recipes that I love.  The first is Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil, lemon peels, orange peels, and pear peels.  It is amazing if you are feeling under the weather and are having sinus issues.

For my second recipe I add cinnamon sticks, clove, and Thieves Essential Oil by Young Living.  This combination adds a wonderful cinnamon scent to the air while killing airborne bacteria.

I have read that adding white vinegar to your simmer pot will purify the air in your home.  Also, if you do not like using the simmer pot on your stove top, many people use crock pots.  I have not tried this yet, but it sounds great.

Another alternative is to use nature’s humidifiers in your home.  Place a Boston palm or a bamboo fern in your home.  These plants increase water vapor in the air and look good as well.

Kick dryness out of your home and be on your way to better health!

Some people call me ”The Google Guru”….LOL; however, I usually do not jump out of bed at 1:30 a.m. to do some googling……at least until last night.

Last night our bedroom was not the peaceful, calm, and quiet bedroom it usually is for a great night of sleep.  Instead, it was a night full of uncontrollable hacking and ridiculously loud snoring.  I felt a little guilty telling my sound asleep husband to please get on his side (over and over again) because he was sawing huge logs, when every two minutes I was coughing uncontrollably.

We have all been there.  Your getting over a nasty cold and the chronic cough sets in.  During the day you are fine and might cough a little bit here and there.  Then, you hit the hay for the nice deep sleep you need to be on your way to better health, when all of a sudden the cough is full blown and throwing a party in your lungs!

That is when you grab the Vicks Vaporub.  I did put some Vicks on my chest before going to bed; however, it only worked for about one hour.  At 1:30 a.m., I found myself downstairs googling “HELP ME GET RID OF MY NIGHTIME COUGH!”

I came across many different articles about putting Vicks on the soles of your feet and then putting your socks on.  I have heard of this before, but I figured it would work more effectively if rubbed on your chest and neck, as it is closer to the respiratory problem.

Well, I gave it a shot and lathered my feet up with the Vicks before putting on some comfy socks.  In about five minutes I was cough-free and slept like a baby the rest of the night.  It was amazing!  My husband also found it amazing, as I stopped bothering him as well.

After thorough research, there does not seem to be a definite answer as to why this method works, but many people have had the same positive results and swear by it.

Vicks also sells Vicks Baby Rub for children under the age of two.  I still use it on my 2-year-old and 6-year-old and it works great for them.  I much prefer to use the Vicks Baby Rub on them instead of strong cough medicines that often do more harm than good.

I am very satisfied with how well Vicks works for a bad cough when put on the soles of your feet.  I am happy to finally stop that rock-star party in my lungs and get the much needed rest I need for better health.
